Since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan, they have banned, drawing of sentient objects, images of living objects in visual media, music, theatre, dance, and denied many rights and freedoms to women and girls, including making it illegal for women to speak in public and access to school, job or education. The Taliban has reconstituted public flogging and have publicly executed several alleged convicts. This is an an imaginable crime against humanity and more than ever we need to celebrate Afghan culture and thats why we fly kites every year.
Brighton Fly With Me will take place on 16th August 2025 in Hove Lawns. come and join us for an epic day of kite making and kite flying in solidarity with Afghanistan. we will supply material to make a kite and take you through a step by step process of creating your own kite. please follow us on social media for more details, Instagram.
Together we celebrate and help to preserve Afghan culture through the simple, joyful act of kite flying, and hopefully can raise awareness about the situation in Afghanistan.
🪁🪁🪁Why Fly With Me? 🪁🪁🪁
An international kite flying festival in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.
On August 15th 2022, to mark one-year since the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, we launched an immersive, international kite flying festival presented by Afghan artists, actors and sportspeople and organised by Good Chance. Spread across 47 locations in the UK, Europe and North America, Fly With Me celebrated the ancient Afghan craft of kite-flying in an aerial act of solidarity with the people of Afghanistan. The artform, alongside music, theatre and dance, have been banned by the Taliban during their occupation of the country. I want to build on the success of this event and continue every year in Brighton where I live now. See the full press coverage here.
Afghanistan is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world right now. Despite promises to support people fleeing the Taliban, the Home Office has since slashed the number of Afghan refugees allowed into the UK, the Afghan Resettlement Scheme has closed, and thousands of Afghan refugees evacuated in August 2021 are now being evicted from their accommodation. We believe people seeking safety deserve much better than this.
