I am very proud to be sharing a few tales about my life, friends, and family with you – as well as some ancient stories from my homeland. Writing this collection has helped me conjure up old memories which I had thought were lost and broken.
Some of the stories are retellings of my favourite fables from childhood. These are commonly known in Afghanistan, and rewriting them here was an insightful process for me - I do hope you enjoy them and learn something. This collection rests upon the very strong tradition of oral storytelling that exists in Afghanistan. It’s a tradition that is not originally intended for writing down on the page, but I hope that the illustrations I have chosen to go alongside the stories, and the simple writing, can bring these texts to life.
The personal tales either tell of a single event or combine stories from over a longer timespan; sometimes I have put two or more events together to create a particular tale. Some of the 1 stories here are based on actual experiences of my own family and friends - who might choose to tell their stories differently depending on the audience or circumstances. An important part of oral storytelling is to keep it relevant to the time, purpose, and audience. I am hoping the moral of these stories are communicated here with sincerity and conviction, and I hope you find something useful out of our experiences. Most importantly, thanks for laughing with me at our sorrows.
